How to Get Started?

Installing WIM 5 is simple. If you have downloaded the file wim5install.exe you can simply double-click on it. If you are installing WIM from other media (e.g. CD) you can either double-click on
the file setup.exe, or select Start - Run and then type D:SETUP (where D is the drive name).

The setup program will make a new directory for WIM (default is C:\Program Files\WIM ), expand and copy all or the selected files, make shortcuts, register the program and all WIM files for uninstalling.

Note that in order to install WIM under Windows NT and 2000 the user installing WIM needs to have Administrator permissions.

During installation you can optionally install Example files that include:
  • sample images, a sample lookup table, etc. - they help you get familiar with WIM functions and can be deleted later.
  • Terascan™ format map projection files for North America.
  • map files for generating “low-resolution” overlays of coastlines, country boundaries and rivers for any image with a projection information.
  • Note that the data files for generating “high resolution” maps of global bathymetry, coastlines, political boundaries and rivers are not part of the downloadable WIM package. These files are in the Maps folder on the WIM CD. In order to speed up access to these files it is recommended that you copy them manually from the CD to a separate folder on your hard disk
    (e.g. C:\Program Files\Wim\Maps).

The setup program will make a new directory for WIM (default is C:\Program Files\WIM ), expand and copy all or the selected files, make shortcuts, register the program and all WIM
files for uninstalling.

Most of the space in WIM directory is actually used by sample images, etc. that you may delete later. The minimum disk space that is needed to run WIM is only about 1.5 MB.

When you run WIM for the first time you are requested to type in your license number that you received with WIM. If you change the hardware configuration of your computer or re-install Windows™ you may need to retype the license number again.

If you installed WIM with the evaluation license then you have to receive and enter the final license number in order to continue using WIM beyond the evaluation period.

When loading an image for the FIRST time:

  • Make sure that you open it with the correct "Files of type" option, i.e., if the file type is "CoastWatch" then select "CoastWatch" as the "Files of type" option. If the file is HDF, select HDF. If you don't see your file in the folder then it may have an extension that is not currently among the default extensions for that file type. Try to locate it with *.* first and if this is a standard extension for your files, modify the Extensions tab for that file type in the Settings menu.
  • It is useful to have the "List of Images" (View-Image List from the Menu) open at all times.
